How to Surround Yourself With Positive Energy and Get Happy

positive energy

Positive energy is contagious. When a stranger treats you to a brilliant, how-do-you-do smile, it’s difficult not to respond in kind with a flash of your own pearly whites. Unfortunately, negative energy can be as equally infectious, and it’s not just the company you keep.

Virtually everything we come in contact with affects our psyche. Our choice of music, television, art and entertainment all help to color our worldview. So while it is impossible and unrealistic to avoid all negativity, you can create a personal environment that will help support a more positive life.

Years ago I was hooked on a popular TV series that centered around a group of FBI profilers and their hunt for the most heinous serial killers. During one especially creepy episode, I questioned the wisdom of watching the show and came to the conclusion that this brand of entertainment added nothing of value to my life. I turned it off mid-episode and never looked back.

After that I became pickier about the stimuli I let into my brain. If the item or activity doesn’t offer some modicum of peace, love or joy (the qualities that I desire), or it has no educational basis, then it doesn’t need to worm its way into my subconscious.

I prefer books and movies with happy endings. I want the hero to win. I don’t like the new, darker Batman, Superman or James Bond and find gritty reality-based television to be anything but uplifting.

I’m not a Pollyanna who looks at the world through rose-colored glasses. There is plenty of dark, murky life to go around. All you have to do is read the world news; it’s everywhere. I don’t need to add more of that to my life.

Try to filter out the negative and see if you can’t bring a little more light into your world, too.
